| Maintenance Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Inspection Frequency | Inspect bucket teeth daily before operation for wear, damage, cracks, or looseness |
| Wear Limit | Replace when tooth tip has worn to 50-60% of original length or when penetration performance noticeably degrades |
| Retention Check | Verify retaining pins and keepers are secure before each shift. Loose teeth can cause adapter damage and premature tooth loss |
| Replacement Practice | Replace teeth in sets to maintain balanced bucket performance and even wear distribution across the cutting edge |
| Adapter Inspection | When replacing teeth, inspect the bucket adapter for wear, cracks, or deformation. Replace worn adapters to ensure proper tooth fitment and retention |
| Pin & Keeper Replacement | Always use new retaining pins and keepers when installing new teeth to ensure secure retention and prevent tooth loss |
| Storage | Store spare teeth in a dry, organized area away from moisture to prevent corrosion and facilitate quick changeouts |
| Welding Precautions | Do not weld on teeth or adapters unless performing authorized repair procedures; welding may alter material hardness and cause premature failure or cracking |
| Wear Pattern Monitoring | Monitor wear patterns; uneven wear may indicate misalignment, loose teeth, or worn adapters requiring attention |
| Safety Category | Precaution / Instruction |
|---|---|
| Personal Protection | Wear heavy-duty work gloves, safety glasses with side shields, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection when handling or installing bucket teeth |
| Lifting Hazards | Bucket teeth are heavy components. Use proper lifting techniques, mechanical assistance, or team lifting to prevent back strain or crushing injuries |
| Sharp Edges | New and worn teeth may have sharp edges, burrs, or cracks. Handle with care to avoid cuts and lacerations. Use gloves at all times |
| Pin Installation | Use appropriate tools (drift pins, sledgehammers) with controlled force. Ensure hands and fingers are clear of striking area to prevent impact injuries |
| Secure Equipment | Before servicing bucket teeth, park equipment on level ground, lower bucket to the ground, engage parking brake, and shut off engine. Remove ignition key |
| Lockout/Tagout | Follow equipment manufacturer lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidental machine movement or hydraulic activation during maintenance |
| Wear Debris | Worn teeth may develop sharp burrs, cracks, or thin edges. Inspect carefully before handling. Dispose of worn parts safely to prevent injury |
| Hot Surfaces | If welding or cutting is required for removal of seized components, allow components to cool before handling to prevent severe burns |
| Eye Protection | When driving out retaining pins, flying debris and metal fragments may occur. Always wear safety glasses with side shields or a face shield |
| Proper Disposal | Dispose of worn ground engaging tools as scrap metal. Do not leave in work areas where they may pose tripping, cutting, or impalement hazards |
| First Aid | For cuts or puncture wounds, clean thoroughly and seek medical attention if necessary. For impact injuries, seek immediate medical evaluation |

Q1: What is the difference between COGENG TK225FD and COGENG TK225CH?
A: The Adapter System.
TK225FD: Vertical Flexpin (Top-down pin). Common on smaller John Deere Backhoe Loader buckets.
TK225CH: Horizontal Side-Pin (Cross-bolt style). Common on Excavator buckets and larger Front-End Loaders. These teeth are NOT interchangeable. A TK225CH tooth will not fit onto a PK225 (FD) adapter nose.
Q2: Will TK225CH fit a Caterpillar machine?
A: Yes, physically. The CH suffix often denotes compatibility with the Caterpillar J-Series side-pin profile. A COGENG TK225CH will fit a Cat J225 adapter.
Caution: While it fits, always verify the retainer pin length. John Deere adapters sometimes have a narrower ear gap than Cat adapters. Ensure the pin provided with COGENG TK225CH is the correct length for your specific adapter casting.
Q3: The new tooth slides on but is loose (side-to-side wobble). Is this normal?
A: No. The CH system relies on a wedge-fit between the tooth rails and adapter rails.
Possible Cause 1: Worn Adapter. The top and bottom rails of the PK225CH adapter are worn down. Installing a new tooth on a worn adapter is a temporary fix; the tooth will "rock" and snap the side pin within hours of digging.
Possible Cause 2: Incorrect Pin Diameter. Ensure you are using the 18mm or 19mm pin specific to this tooth series. A slightly undersized pin allows the tooth to walk forward and backward on the adapter.
Q4: Can I weld this COGENG tooth to the adapter to stop it wobbling?
A: Not Recommended. Welding the high-carbon forged steel of the TK225CH tooth to the cast steel of the adapter creates a Martensitic brittle zone at the weld line. The tooth will likely snap off at the weld under impact, leaving a dangerous sharp stub that is very difficult to remove in the field. If the adapter is worn, the correct repair is to replace the adapter (PK225CH).
